Witchcraft podcast released

It was over a year ago when I was approached with the idea of producing a podcast that would reflect the stories and issues raised about something I and many others think no longer exists.

The persecution of people accused of witchcraft continues to be an issue around the world. Professor Charlotte Baker, of Lancaster University's School of Global Affairs and the International Network Against Accusations of Witchcraft and Associated Harmful Practices (TINAAWAHP) helped put the horrific issue of human rights atrocities linked to witchcraft on the United Nations radar. Prof Baker commissioned me to produce the podcast and introduced to me a fascinating group of like-minded people drawn from all around the world.

It was a real challenge; the issue is still very alive, and not just in developing nations. The US and UK continue to record cases where witchcraft-related beliefs have resulted in serious violations of human rights including, beatings, banishment, the cutting of body parts, and amputation of limbs, being set on fire, torture and murder.

The team who successfully inspired the United Nations Human Rights Council to pass a Resolution calling for the elimination of harmful actions continue to work towards eradicating the practice.

This wonderful podcast by Nigel Thompson MCIPR Chart.PR captures the many voices and perspectives of participants in our international conference ‘Witchcraft and Human Rights: Implementing Resolution 47/8’ at Lancaster University in September 2024.

The event was organised in collaboration with The International Network Against Accusations of Witchcraft and Ritual Attacks, and supported by funding from the Lancaster University AHRC IAA.

Prof Charlotte Baker, Professor of French and Critical Disability Studies, School of Global Affairs, and Faculty Associate Dean for Engagement, Lancaster University. Director of the Disability Inclusion Africa Network
